ComponentRadio Remote and Control Systems
Where the operator sees the load from determines how safely the crane is used.
Which one, and when
Pendant control is simple, cheap, and easy to troubleshoot when it fails; but the operator has to stand wherever the control cable reaches, usually close to the load.
Radio remote removes that constraint: the operator works from wherever gives the best view of the load. It's a clear gain in safety and comfort, and it's close to standard in facilities with wide spans and large open areas.
An operator cabin is preferred in process applications with continuous operation, where the crane is used without interruption for long periods.
Safety features
On radio remote, the transmitter is paired to the receiver; this prevents another transmitter from operating the same crane. The emergency stop on the transmitter cuts the power circuit.
On signal loss the crane stops safely. If more than one crane operates in the same area, channel management and zone-restriction systems come into play.
Comparison
| Criterion | Pendant control | Radio remote | Cabin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operator position | Wherever the cable allows | Wherever they choose | On the crane |
| Visibility | Limited | Best angle can be chosen | Wide view from height |
| Safety | Stays close to the load | Can stay clear of the load | Enclosed cabin |
| Continuous use | Tiring | Suitable | Best suited |
| Fault diagnosis | Easy | Battery/pairing/antenna | Complex |
| Cost | Low | Moderate | High |
Technical terms
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pairing | The procedure that identifies a transmitter to a receiver. |
| Channel | The radio frequency channel the transmitter uses. |
| Zone restriction | A control function that prevents the crane from entering defined areas. |
| Dead-man button | A safety button that cuts motion when released. |
Frequently asked questions
Is radio remote affected by interference?
Modern systems run on channel management and secure pairing. Still, in a high-electromagnetic-noise environment, channel selection and antenna placement need to be planned correctly.
Can I add radio remote to my existing crane?
Yes, this is a common modernisation item. The control circuit and safety functions need to be adapted to the new setup.
