Crane TypeFull Gantry Crane
Full area coverage even with no building: two legs, two rails, out in the open.
Structure
In a full gantry crane the bridge is carried on two legs, and the legs run on a rail laid on the ground. In other words, the crane builds its own support system over the area it works in.
This is the only practical overhead-crane solution on sites with no building structure: marble stockyards, precast concrete yards, scrap and profile storage areas.
Ground and runway
A gantry crane's legs transfer point loads that are high. A reinforced-concrete beam is poured under the runway, and the ground's capacity to carry that load is verified.
Runways installed without a ground survey settle over time; span and level go out, and the crane starts to run off the rail. This is one of the most expensive faults to fix later.
Outdoor equipment
| Condition | Equipment required |
|---|---|
| Wind | Storm anchor, an anemometer if needed |
| Rain and humidity | Elevated IP-rated motor, panel and junction boxes |
| Dust | Enclosed conductor line, protected bearings |
| Ground | Reinforced-concrete rail beam, ground survey |
| Sun / UV | UV-resistant cable, suitable paint system |
| Winter conditions | Heated panel, low-temperature grease |
Technical terms
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Rail beam | A reinforced-concrete beam poured under the runway to spread the load into the ground. |
| Storm anchor | A device that secures the crane to the rail when not in operation. |
| Anemometer | A device that measures wind speed and warns when a limit is exceeded. |
| Leg | The vertical support carrying the bridge onto the ground-level runway. |
Frequently asked questions
Can it run on tyres instead of rails?
Rubber-tyred gantry solutions are used in certain applications, but they behave differently from a rail-mounted system in terms of positioning precision and capacity. The decision depends on site ground conditions and how the crane will be operated.
Does it run in winter?
Yes, with suitable grease, a heated panel and elevated protection class. Operation is still halted above a defined wind speed for safety.
